Where each one wins

Coveo — zero-ops, ML relevance, deep ecosystem

Coveo's strength is being fully managed with strong out-of-the-box ML relevance and analytics. If you want a vendor to run everything, you're already in the Salesforce/ServiceNow ecosystem Coveo integrates with, and per-query pricing fits your traffic, it's a strong choice. The trade-off is the SaaS model: your indexed content lives in Coveo's cloud, and costs scale with query volume.

Lucidworks Fusion — pipelines and control, self-hostable

Fusion is built on Apache Solr and exposes powerful indexing/query pipelines and ML modules. It can run inside your perimeter, which solves data residency. The trade-off is cost and operational weight: it's a licensed enterprise product with infrastructure to run and pipelines to tune.

Viglet Turing ES — open-source, self-hosted, search + AI in one

Turing ES keeps your content on your own infrastructure under Apache 2.0, with no per-query bill. It bundles faceted search, semantic/vector search, and RAG with the LLM of your choice (OpenAI, Ollama, Anthropic, Gemini) in one platform — plus AI agents with 27 built-in tools and MCP server support. Its search backend is pluggable: run on Apache Solr, Elasticsearch, or the embedded Lucene engine. The trade-off is that you operate it yourself (Docker makes this light) and commercial support is optional rather than bundled.

The real decision axes

  1. Managed vs. self-hosted. Coveo removes all ops at the cost of data residency and per-query pricing. Fusion and Turing ES run in your perimeter; Turing ES is the only fully open-source option of the three.
  2. Cost shape. Per-query/seat (Coveo) grows with success; license + infra (Fusion) is a large fixed commitment; Turing ES is compute-only.
  3. Search + AI in one vs. assembled. Turing ES ships faceted search, semantic search, RAG, and agents together. With the others you often add an AI tier (and a bill) separately.
  4. Connector quality. All three index AEM; Turing ES does it through Dumont DEP with event-driven sync and automatic tag → facet mapping.

When to pick which

  • Coveo — you want zero-ops managed search with mature ML relevance and live in its ecosystem, and data residency is not a hard constraint.
  • Lucidworks Fusion — you need self-hosted, pipeline-heavy search with a dedicated search team and budget for a licensed platform.
  • Viglet Turing ES — you want self-hosted, open-source enterprise search with facets, semantic search, RAG, and agents built in, on your own infrastructure, with optional commercial support.
